A LiFePO₄ portable power station is one of the most durable pieces of consumer electronics you can buy. The cells are rated for 3,000–4,000 charge cycles — that's 8–10 years of daily use. But how you store it and how you charge it matters more than most people realize. A station that lives in a hot garage at 100% charge will lose capacity twice as fast as one that lives in a cool closet at 70%. This guide covers the care rules that keep your station alive for a decade.

1. Why LiFePO₄ is the right chemistry (and why care still matters)

LiFePO₄ (LFP) replaced lithium-ion (NMC) in premium portable stations around 2022–2024. The chemistry is more stable, has a longer cycle life, and tolerates deep discharge better than the older lithium chemistries. Every station we sell uses LFP cells rated for 3,000+ cycles to 80% capacity.

But LFP still hates the same things all batteries hate: extreme heat, extreme cold, sitting at 100% for months, and sitting at 0% for months. Avoid those four situations and your station will outlive your other electronics.

2. The four storage rules

  1. Charge to 50–80% for storage. A station stored at 100% loses capacity faster than one stored at 70–80%. A station stored at 0% risks bricking the BMS. The sweet spot is 60–80% for any storage longer than a week.
  2. Keep it cool. 50–77°F is ideal. A cool closet beats a hot garage. Heat accelerates every chemical degradation in the cell.
  3. Keep it dry. All EcoFlow stations handle rain and spills, but long-term humidity corrodes connectors. A dry indoor space is best.
  4. Top up every 3–6 months. LFP self-discharges about 1–3% per month. After six months in storage, top the station back to 60–80% to prevent the BMS from cutting off at low voltage.

3. Charging rules for long life

  • Avoid 100% for daily use. Most modern BMS systems let you cap the charge at 80% — the EcoFlow app exposes this on the DELTA 3 and above. Use it. Living between 20–80% doubles the cycle count compared to living between 0–100%.
  • Don't charge below freezing. Charging an LFP cell below 32°F plates lithium on the anode and permanently damages capacity. The EcoFlow BMS blocks charging below freezing automatically — but if your station has been in a cold car overnight, let it warm up to room temperature before plugging in.
  • Use the included charger. The included AC and DC chargers are tuned to the station's BMS. Third-party chargers may work but bypass the BMS's voltage cutoffs. Stay stock.
  • Avoid fast charging every cycle. X-Stream fast charging is great in a hurry; it's slightly harder on the cells than slow charging. For daily use, slow charging is gentler.

4. Cold weather care

LFP cells lose capacity in cold weather — about 10–20% at 20°F, more near 0°F. The cells aren't damaged; they just can't release as much energy until they warm up. If your station has been in a cold car, let it warm up indoors before drawing significant load. For winter camping, keep the station inside the sleeping bag or in an insulated case. 5. Hot weather care

Heat is the bigger long-term enemy. A station in a 100°F garage degrades twice as fast as one in a 70°F closet. If you must store a station in a hot space, pull it into air conditioning during the day. For RV owners, the cargo bay in summer can hit 130°F — not a good place for a station.

6. Three-year capacity test

Store two identical stations at 80% charge for three years. One in a 70°F closet, one in a 100°F garage. The closet station retains 95% capacity; the garage station retains 80% capacity. Same model, same cells, same cycles — but the heat eats the garage station's chemistry twice as fast. That's the difference between 8 years and 16 years of usable life.

8. FAQ — power station care

How long do LiFePO4 stations last?

3,000–4,000 cycles to 80% capacity, or 8–10 years of daily use. With good care, 10–15 years. Badly stored (hot garage, 100% charge), 4–6 years.

Can I leave a portable station plugged in all the time?

Yes — modern BMS prevents overcharging. But for longest life, set the charge cap to 80% in the app and unplug once a month for a few cycles.

What happens if I store at 0%?

The BMS will cut off to protect the cells, but the cells may still drop below the safe voltage over months of self-discharge. This can permanently damage capacity. Always store at 30%+.

Should I drain the battery to 0% once a month to recalibrate it?

No. Unlike phones, LFP batteries don't need a full discharge cycle. The BMS tracks state-of-charge accurately without calibration cycles. Avoid 0% entirely.
